About the course

Courses are being run as follows:

  • 09:30 - 12:30, Monday 24th July 2023

Please follow the screens to book.

Bikeability Level 1 is an off road course and is suitable for those who have just learned to ride and no longer use stabilisers. Our instructors develop road cycling and safety skills through explanation, demonstration and practical exercises off road in preparation for our Bikeability Level 2 on road training.

The instructors, during the training, will introduce the 'core functions' set out in the National Standard for Cycling:

  •    Observation
  •    Communication
  •    Priorities
  •    Positioning

Bikeability Level 1 Cycle Training improves balance and control skills and takes place in a traffic-free area. Through a series of fun exercises and games, trainees practise riding one-handed, looking all around, stopping with control, sharing space, manoeuvring at low speed, using gears if they have them and turning with control. Trainees also learn a simple bike check.

At the end of the course, trainees receive a badge and a certificate.

This course will go ahead whatever the weather, so please send your child with appropriate clothing (particularly waterproofs and/or sunscreen applied in advance).

Location
Please meet the instructors by the fenced off area of car park near Pool in the Park (What 3 Words - ///glove.incomes.crazy). The instructors will be wearing high-vis jackets.

Skills the rider needsyou need before starting the course

Thank you. You have selected Bikeability Level 1.

As a starting point, people who do the course need to be able to ride a little without using stabilisers.

If you can't ride a bike at all, or need to use stabilisers, please consider our 'Learn to Ride' course. If, on the other hand, you can ride quite well and want  to ride on the road, then please have a look at our 'Level 2' course.

Cycle

Please make sure your child's cycle is in working condition

Your child's cycle must be roadworthy. Could you check it before the training, please. The ABC check (external link, opens in a new window) is the quickest check, and the M check (external link, opens in new window) is more thorough. BMX bikes must have both brakes fitted.

Our Instructors are authorised to make minor adjustments, with your child's consent, such as adjusting saddle height, but they are not cycle mechanics.

Helmet

Please make sure your child's helmet is correctly fitted

British law does not compel cyclists of any age to wear helmets but rule 59 of the Highway Code states: 'You should wear a cycle helmet that conforms to current regulations, is the correct size and securely fastened. Evidence suggests that a correctly fitted helmet will reduce your risk of sustaining a head injury in certain circumstances.'

We recommend that your child wears a helmet.

If your child will be wearing a cycle helmet please make sure it is correctly fitted (external link, opens in a new window) prior to the course.
