If your child misses a day of the training

If your child misses part of the course, the Instructors will have to judge if they can rejoin. It might be that they cannot.

Instructors work within the national framework for Bikeability and this includes being 'rider-led', that is, progressing at a pace that suits the skills and needs of the group of children on the course.

In this way, each course varies.

The first session is an assessment in the playground to decide whether each child is able to start riding on the road. This session might take more time for one group than another. Another group might progress more quickly from practising at quiet junctions to practising on roads with moderate levels of traffic. 

Each day, the children are building on the skills they learned previously. 

If a child misses one day of a course, there may not be an opportunity for them to catch up with the rest of the group and so they will not be able to continue with the course.

If your child cannot complete a course after missing a day, we will look to transfer them to a later course, if there are any booked that have spaces left, but unfortunately we cannot guarantee it. If your child cannot continue on a course through illness, or other unforeseen circumstance, we will refund the course fee.

Your child's year group

This training is for children in year 6 and above. Please confirm which year group your child is in.

Please ensure your child's cycle is in good working order

Your child's cycle must be roadworthy.  Could you check it before the training, please.

The ABC check (external link, opens in a new window) is the quickest check, and the M check (external link, opens in new window) is more thorough. BMX bikes must have both brakes fitted.

Our Instructors are authorised to make minor adjustments, with your child's consent, such as adjusting saddle height, but they are not cycle mechanics.

We may also need to lock the bikes in case we go inside so please bring a suitable bike lock.

Please note, it is illegal for someone aged under 14 years to ride an electrically-assisted pedal cycle on the public highway, so such bikes cannot be accepted on to the course.

Please check your child's helmet is correctly fitted

Although the law does not compel cyclists of any age to wear helmets, rule 59 of the Highway Code states: 'You should wear a cycle helmet that conforms to current regulations, is the correct size and securely fastened. Evidence suggests that a correctly fitted helmet will reduce your risk of sustaining a head injury in certain circumstances.'

For this reason, we have made it compulsory for everyone participating in cycle training to wear a helmet. Instructors will be wearing helmets. The helmet should conform to to EN1078 or EN1080, please check for a label inside the helmet.

Just before the course, please make sure your child's helmet is correctly fitted - this 1 minute video shows how.

Who will be collecting your child at the end of the training sessions?

You are responsible for your child until the session starts - there is no supervision outside of this time. Please ensure you collect your child promptly at the end of the session.

If you are not collecting your child, please confirm the name and phone number of the adult (over 16) who will be collecting your child.
